About this position

Postdoctoral Fellow in Severe Convection and Large-Scale Dynamics at Stockholm University, Department of Meteorology (MISU), Sweden.

This postdoctoral project focuses on severe convection, large-scale atmospheric dynamics, meteorology, climate science, and multiscale interactions in the atmosphere. The research asks how synoptic-scale flow supports severe convection and how latent heating from organized convection can feed back on upper-level flow, jet stream evolution, Rossby waves, blocking, heatwaves, and predictability on medium-range to subseasonal timescales.

The successful candidate will use the ICON model for targeted numerical experiments, combining convection-permitting and large-scale numerical modeling, dynamical diagnostics, Lagrangian analysis, and statistical attribution. Simulations will run on HPC infrastructure, and postprocessing/analysis will be done largely in Python.

Responsibilities include conducting simulations, processing and analyzing large atmospheric datasets, developing analysis workflows for model output, publishing in peer-reviewed journals, presenting at conferences and workshops, and supervising/advising MSc and BSc student projects.

Eligibility: a completed doctoral degree in meteorology, atmospheric sciences, climate science, or a related field is required. Strong research skills in the topic area, excellent English, independence, initiative, and collaboration are emphasized. A recent PhD is advantageous, but older degrees may be considered under special circumstances.

Employment is full-time for 2–3 years, with possible extension under special circumstances. Start date is by 1 January 2027 or earlier by agreement. Apply via Stockholm University’s recruitment system before 28 August 2026.

Funding details

Full funding including tuition fees and living expenses is available for this position. The scholarship covers all educational costs and provides a monthly stipend.
