About this position
PhD Research Fellow position in molecular fingerprinting in organoids using Raman spectroscopy and autofluorescence micro-spectroscopy at the University of Oslo, Department of Physics, Oslo, Norway.
The project develops and applies label-free optical spectroscopy to study molecular and metabolic changes in organoid models of viral infection, including HIV-1 and Venezuelan equine encephalitis virus (VEEV). The work combines Raman micro-spectroscopy, UV-visible autofluorescence spectroscopy, waveguide-enhanced spectroscopy, AI-assisted spectral analysis, and machine-learning methods for high-dimensional biological data.
Supervision is by Prof. Balpreet Singh Ahluwalia and Associated Professor Elisabeth Wetzer. The position is part of the MSCA Doctoral Network MERIT and includes collaboration and travel with partner institutions and other doctoral candidates.
Applicants should hold a relevant Master’s degree in physics, engineering, biophysics, biomedical technologies, or related fields; have strong experimental experience in optics/photonics/spectroscopy; and be comfortable with Python, MATLAB, image/spectral analysis, and basic AI tools. Fluent English is required, and candidates must satisfy MERIT/MSCA mobility and PhD admission criteria at UiO.
Funding is for 3 years with salary in the range NOK 550,800–595,000 depending on competence and experience. The start date is no later than 1 April 2027, and the application deadline is 30 October 2026.

What's required
Applicants must have a Master’s degree or equivalent in physics, engineering, biophysics, biomedical technologies, or related fields, with the master dissertation submitted by the closing date. A strong background in optics, photonics, spectroscopy, or related experimental techniques is required, along with hands-on experience developing, operating, or applying optical spectroscopic instrumentation such as Raman spectroscopy. Candidates should have experience with data analysis and scientific programming (e.g. Python, MATLAB), familiarity with image/spectral analysis tools and basic AI tools, and willingness to undertake research visits, secondments, and training at partner institutions. Fluent oral and written English is required. Applicants must also meet MERIT/MSCA eligibility criteria, including not having a prior doctorate and not having resided or carried out their main activity in the recruiting country or institution for more than 12 months in the 3 years before recruitment. Admission to the UiO PhD programme requires the relevant grade thresholds (bachelor average C or better, master average B or better, and master thesis grade B or better in the Norwegian system).
How to apply
Apply through the MERIT doctoral candidate vacancy link. Submit the application before 30 October 2026 and follow the detailed instructions on the application page. Late applications will not be considered.
