About this position

PhD Research Fellow opportunity at the University of Oslo, Department of Physics, for a project on multi-modal microscopy and tomography of virus-infected organoids.

The project focuses on developing and adapting advanced optical microscopy methods, including photonic chip-based super-resolution microscopy, optical diffraction tomography, and quantitative phase microscopy, to study viral infection in organoid models such as gut and brain organoids. The work also includes correlative fluorescence microscopy, advanced image analysis, AI-assisted segmentation/classification, and computational analysis of multimodal datasets.

This is a PhD opening (Doctoral Candidate 5, DC 5) within the MERIT MSCA Doctoral Network. The fellowship lasts 3 years and starts no later than 1 April 2027. The position is based in Oslo, Norway.

Eligibility highlights: Master’s degree or equivalent in physics, engineering, biomedical engineering, biophysics, or a related field; strong hands-on experience with optical instrumentation and microscopy systems; strong data analysis skills in Python or MATLAB; fluent English; and willingness to work in a multidisciplinary international research network. Applicants must also satisfy UiO PhD admission grade requirements and MERIT mobility rules.

Funding: PhD Research Fellow salary range NOK 550,800–595,000, plus standard pension deductions. The post is part of a funded doctoral network with travel, collaboration, secondments, and training activities.

Supervisors: Prof. Balpreet Singh Ahluwalia and Prof. Dag Kristian Dysthe, University of Oslo.

Deadline: 30 October 2026.

How to apply: Use the MERIT doctoral candidate vacancy link and submit your application before the deadline. Follow the detailed instructions on the application page and ensure your master’s thesis is submitted for evaluation by the closing date.
