About this position

NHH Norwegian School of Economics is advertising one PhD Research Scholar position in the Department of Strategy and Management in Bergen, Norway. The project is titled Psychology and Decision Science: Understanding “freedom to choose” and sits at the intersection of psychology, decision science, social psychology, behavioral economics, and related social science fields.

The PhD scholar will join an interdisciplinary research program on human agency and quality of life, exploring how people think about freedom, what counts as a genuine free choice, how freedom is valued relative to other moral values, and how concerns about freedom shape policy preferences, work motivation, leadership, and consumer behavior. The work will be based primarily in social psychology and decision-making research, with collaboration through the FAIR research centre at NHH.

Applicants should have a strong academic background, normally a five-year MSc in Economics and Business Administration or a comparable degree, with at least a B average in the Norwegian grading system. The department especially welcomes candidates from psychology or related social sciences such as behavioral economics, organisational behavior, or political science. The position expects quantitative research methods, including experiments and surveys, and the scholar will be expected to develop advanced data analysis skills, learn R, and follow open science best practices.

The PhD programme is fully funded and lasts four years. It includes salary, teaching-related work (25% of time), pedagogical training, research funds for travel and conferences, and support for research stays abroad. The advertised salary is NOK 570,000 per year from August 2027, with possible adjustment for highly qualified applicants. The position is based at NHH in Bergen.

Language and academic testing requirements apply: GMAT or GRE for academic skills, and TOEFL, IELTS, or PTE Academic for English proficiency, unless exempt. Exemptions are available for some Nordic qualifications and native English speakers. The post also notes that female applicants will be given preference if candidates are otherwise equally qualified.

Applications must be submitted via Jobbnorge by 15 September 2026. Required documents include degree certificates and transcripts, a statement of purpose, a research proposal, CV, and a list of publications or research activities. Recommendation letters are optional and may be sent directly to the listed email address.
