About this position

PhD Researcher in Clinical Neuroimmunology at the Fundació Hospital Universitari Vall d’Hebron – Institut de Recerca (VHIR), Spain.

The VHIR Clinical Neuroimmunology Research Group / Cemcat is recruiting a highly motivated PhD candidate for the project “Deciphering the Pathogenic Mechanisms of EBV-Infected B Cells in Multiple Sclerosis (DECODE-MS)”. The project investigates how Epstein–Barr virus (EBV) may contribute to the development and early onset of multiple sclerosis (MS), with a strong focus on the pathogenic role of EBV-infected B cells.

The work combines immunology, molecular biology, cell biology, virology, and advanced human experimental models. Main tasks include phenotypic and molecular characterisation of EBV-infected B cells from peripheral blood and cerebrospinal fluid, B-cell isolation and culture, flow cytometry, molecular analyses, generation and study of spontaneous lymphoblastoid cell lines (SLCLs), and analysis of antibodies and extracellular vesicles in human experimental systems.

Eligibility highlights: degree in Biomedical Sciences, Biology, Biochemistry, Biotechnology, Immunology or related life/health sciences; an official Master’s degree that grants access to a PhD programme; minimum average grade of 8.5/10 in both Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees; good English; and alignment with the eligibility requirements of the Amics del VHIR PhD Call 2026. Desirable experience includes human samples, mammalian cell culture, PCR/qPCR, immunofluorescence, flow cytometry, immune phenotyping, B-cell biology, EBV, extracellular vesicles, or omics.

Funding: PhD contract and gross annual salary according to the Amics del VHIR PhD Call 2026. The position is full-time (37.5 hours/week). The post also mentions VHIR benefits such as flexible working hours, annual leave, wellbeing support, and international mobility assistance.

Deadline: 26 August 2026, 23:59 (Europe/Andorra).

How to apply: Submit your application via the VHIR jobs portal. An Euraxess application page is also provided in the post.
