About this position

Leiden University’s Van Vollenhoven Institute for Law, Governance and Society (VVI) is recruiting a PhD Researcher for the Minaret Project, a HORIZON Unit Grant-funded interdisciplinary and transnational research initiative on the interconnection between law, religion, governance, constitutional reform, and post-imperial Islamic legal culture.

The advertised PhD project is titled “A Sociology of Post-Imperial Islamic Legal Culture: Insights from Central Asia, the Middle East, North Africa, and Southeast Asia”. The successful candidate will contribute to the subproject Neo-Imperialism and Constitutional Reform: The Global Dimension, focusing on how international organizations and global governance actors shape constitutional reform in countries such as Jordan, Lebanon, and Syria. The research uses socio-legal and policy analysis, elite interviews, and qualitative methods to study how donor-driven rule-of-law and good-governance programs are negotiated, adapted, resisted, or hybridized in practice.

This is a 4-year PhD position based in Leiden, Netherlands, with a full-time appointment (1.0 FTE). The role includes original empirical research, doctoral dissertation writing, co-authored publications, public engagement, and participation in project events, summer schools, workshops, and training activities. The project also requires two secondments abroad with partner organizations, plus extended fieldwork periods.

Eligibility highlights: applicants should hold an MSc or LLM in Anthropology, Political Science, Law, International Studies, International Relations, Development Studies, or a related field. Experience with empirical research, civil society actors, constitutional reform, socio-legal literature, and qualitative methods is preferred. Familiarity with Jordan, Lebanon, or Syria is an asset, and Arabic is strongly recommended.

Funding and conditions: the position comes with an employment contract under the CLA of Dutch Universities, a salary of €3204–€4051 gross per month, holiday allowance, end-of-year bonus, pension, and commuting reimbursement.

Application deadline: 31 January 2027. Apply via the Leiden University careers portal and submit a cover letter, CV, transcripts, a major writing sample, and 2–3 academic references addressed to Dr. Nadia Sonneveld.
