About this position
Wageningen University & Research is advertising a fully funded PhD position on Militarization of Societal Resilience in the Netherlands. The project sits in the chair Sociology of Development and Change and examines how Dutch resilience policies, crisis planning, civil-military relations, and military expansion may contribute to militarization and militarism.
The PhD will combine a literature review, analysis of Dutch policy documents, and qualitative empirical research on the implementation of resilience measures such as expansion of military terrains, emergency booklets, citizen mobilization, increased civil-military cooperation, and new crisis plans. The work is strongly oriented toward critical scholarship on resilience and critical military studies, with opportunities to publish scientific articles and contribute to policy and practice.
Supervision is by Prof. Bram Büscher, with co-supervision by Dr. Jori Kalkman and Dr. Sumit Vij. The position is based at Wageningen University & Research in Wageningen, Netherlands.
Eligibility highlights include an MSc in the social sciences, strong research and writing skills, affinity with domestic security/armed forces/resilience, and experience with qualitative methods such as interviews, document analysis, visual analysis, or ethnography. Applicants must be fluent in Dutch and have English at C1 level; a certificate of proficiency may be required, and a certificate of conduct (VOG) is also needed.
