About this position

UCLA Tanigawa Lab is recruiting for PhD and postdoctoral positions in the Department of Bioengineering at the University of California, Los Angeles.

The lab works on biomedical data science, statistical modeling, human genetics, computational genomics, AI/ML, cross-ancestry polygenic prediction, and therapeutic target discovery. The research theme is disease heterogeneity: understanding why individuals differ in disease onset, progression, and treatment response, and developing statistical and computational tools to uncover the mechanistic basis of these differences.

PhD opportunities are funded and available through either the Graduate Program in Bioengineering (direct admission) or the Bioinformatics interdepartmental PhD program. The application deadline is December 1, 2026. Applicants are encouraged to contact the lab before the deadline to discuss motivation, interests, and qualifications.

Postdoctoral openings are available for a mutually agreed interdisciplinary project on representation learning for disease heterogeneity dissection. Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis after the initial review date and remain open until filled. The PI encourages applicants to also pursue external postdoctoral fellowships and offers support where possible.

Applicants should send a specific inquiry and an up-to-date CV/resume to [email protected]. Postdoc applicants should also prepare a CV, cover letter, statement of research, and optional teaching statement. Generic emails are discouraged; the lab asks for clear alignment with its research program.

What's required

PhD applicants should apply through the UCLA Graduate Program in Bioengineering (direct admission) or the Bioinformatics interdepartmental PhD program and check eligibility accordingly. The lab seeks highly motivated trainees with research interests aligned to biomedical data science, statistical modeling, human genetics, computational genomics, AI/ML, cross-ancestry polygenic prediction, or therapeutic target discovery. Postdoctoral applicants should have a strong interdisciplinary background and provide a CV, cover letter, statement of research, and optional teaching statement. Applicants are encouraged to contact the PI before the deadline and should describe specific interests and fit; generic inquiries are discouraged. For UCLA PhD students, prior alignment with the lab's research interests is preferred, and preparatory coursework may be advised for some master's/undergraduate researchers.

How to apply

Email [email protected] with a specific inquiry about your interests in the lab and attach your most up-to-date CV or resume. PhD applicants should apply through the relevant UCLA graduate program by the deadline. Postdoc applicants should submit the requested application materials and may be reviewed on a rolling basis until filled.
