About this position
CIC energiGUNE invites applications for a PhD position focused on the development, adaptation, and validation of recycling strategies for next-generation lithium-ion battery waste containing silicon–graphite anode materials. The research will address both manufacturing scraps and end-of-life black mass, aiming to advance sustainable battery recycling technologies.
The successful candidate will join the Electrochemical Energy Storage and Conversion (EESC) area, specifically the Inorganic Materials for Batteries group. Key responsibilities include developing and testing lab-scale recycling routes using various physico-chemical separation processes, optimizing steps such as material pretreatment, delamination, leaching, purification, and recovery of valuable battery materials. The candidate will characterize recovered materials using physicochemical and electrochemical techniques, analyze experimental results, prepare reports, and contribute to scientific publications and project meetings.
This position offers a 3-year predoctoral contract with the possibility of renewal based on performance and funding. Candidates will have full access to cutting-edge laboratory facilities and characterization platforms, and will be integrated into a top European research center with a strong focus on energy and sustainability. The work environment is integrated, enthusiastic, international, and multidisciplinary.
Applicants must hold a Master’s degree or equivalent in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, Electrochemistry, Environmental Engineering, Energy Storage, Metallurgy, or a closely related discipline. Previous hands-on laboratory experience is required, along with basic knowledge of chemical processing and materials characterization. Excellent written and spoken English, motivation for battery recycling and sustainable process development, and strong analytical and problem-solving skills are essential.
