About this position
PhD stipend at Aalborg University in the AI:X Collaborate Lab on co-designing technical AI for collaborative learning. The project sits at the intersection of computer science, information technology, education, human-computer interaction, participatory design, and artificial intelligence.
The lab focuses on how students learn with, through, and around AI, and how generative AI can be designed to support dialogue, negotiation, shared inquiry, collective knowledge building, reflection, decision-making, and collaborative production rather than isolated individual productivity. The PhD candidate will investigate how technical AI systems can support learning and interaction in collaborative educational settings, with a specific focus on the co-design, development, and evaluation of multi-user GenAI platforms.
The position is hosted at the Department of Architecture, Design and Media Technology at the Technical Faculty of IT and Design (TECH). Supervisors are Associate Professor Niels Erik Ruan Lyngdorf and Associate Professor Kasper Rodil. The post is part of the broader AI:X initiative at Aalborg University, which will launch ten labs in 2026 and includes 20 PhD stipends.
Applicants should have a strong technical background, ideally in computer science, software engineering, HCI, Medialogy, AI, or machine learning. Strong programming skills are required, and experience with open-source LLM environments is an advantage. Because the research involves collaborative educational settings and participant-design sessions, fluent Danish is required. Experience with PBL contexts and interdisciplinary collaboration is especially welcome.
The stipend is for three years, with appointment from 1 November 2026 or soon thereafter. The candidate must already hold a Master’s degree and, as part of the PhD programme, complete 30 ECTS of courses, gain teaching or dissemination experience, and complete an external research stay outside Aalborg University, preferably 3–6 months at a foreign research institution.
