About this position

Aalborg University, Department of Energy, Campus Esbjerg, is inviting applications for a three-year PhD stipend in dynamic modelling, simulation and optimization of Power-to-X processes for renewable fuel production.

The project sits at the intersection of chemical engineering, process engineering, mechanical engineering, energy engineering, and electrical engineering. Research topics include physics-based process modelling, electrolysers, fuel-synthesis units, energy storage, heat integration, process dynamics and control, operational optimization, techno-economic assessment, and grid interaction. The work specifically mentions renewable fuels such as green methanol and sustainable aviation fuel, including Fischer–Tropsch and methanol-to-jet pathways.

You will join the Fluid & Process research group at AAU Energy in Esbjerg, working in an international and interdisciplinary environment with academic and industrial partners in Denmark and across Europe. The position includes scientific publishing, conference presentations, project meetings, and limited teaching or supervision duties.

Eligibility highlights: applicants should hold or be close to completing a master’s degree in a relevant engineering field and should have a strong background in process modelling, thermodynamics, heat and mass transfer, process control, optimization, or energy-system analysis. Experience with Aspen Plus, Aspen HYSYS, MATLAB, Python, or similar tools is advantageous. Knowledge of Power-to-X, electrolysis, renewable fuels, process integration, energy storage, power systems, electricity markets, or grid integration is a plus. Strong English skills are required.

Funding: the PhD stipend includes salary and pension benefits. The base salary starts at 31,242.75 DKK before taxes plus 18.07% pension, with final salary negotiable depending on qualifications and experience.

Application window: deadline is 16 August 2026. Applications must include a motivation letter, CV, bachelor’s and master’s diplomas with grades, a 4–5 page project description, and other relevant documents. Submit via Aalborg University’s recruitment system.

Location: Campus Esbjerg, Denmark.
