About this position
Aalborg University invites applications for a PhD stipend in invasive insect ecology and ecological modelling at the Department of Chemistry and Bioscience, Faculty of Engineering and Science. This opportunity is part of the Biology study program and is open for appointment from August 1, 2026, or as soon as possible thereafter. The position is based in Aalborg, Denmark, and spans three years.
The research project addresses the increasing redistribution of invasive insect species worldwide, driven by climate change and global travel and trade. The successful candidate will focus on modelling species distributions and population dynamics of invasive insects, such as the agricultural pest Spotted Wing Drosophila, under current and future climate scenarios. The project combines ecological modelling with laboratory experiments, including mechanistic distribution models, environmental tolerance studies (e.g., thermal fertility limits), and microclimate modelling to predict distributions and seasonal population dynamics.
The PhD candidate will participate in all aspects of the project, including literature review, experimental work, modelling, data analysis, and scientific writing. The project can be tailored to the candidate’s interests and expertise. The candidate will also engage in teaching activities related to ecology, ecophysiology, and ecosystem modelling, and supervise student projects within the section. All educational programs at Aalborg University are based on Problem Based Learning, with project work comprising half of the teaching in each semester.
Applicants must have a relevant educational background in biology or a similar area, strong competences in ecology, excellent analytical skills, and proficiency in R (or equivalent). Experience in insect ecology, species distribution modelling, population dynamics, or thermal eco-physiology is advantageous. Proficiency in written and spoken English is mandatory. The selected candidate will join the EcoClimate Modelling research group within the Section of Functional Ecology and Genomics. As part of the PhD study, a 4-6 month research stay abroad is expected, likely in laboratories of collaborators in Australia or France.
PhD stipends are allocated to individuals holding a Master's degree and are normally for a period of 3 years. Enrollment as a PhD student at the Doctoral School of Engineering and Science is required, with completion of PhD courses (30 ECTS), teaching experience, and an external research stay. The department offers a vibrant research environment with approximately 150 employees, 75 PhD students, and 775 bachelor and master’s students across campuses in Aalborg and Esbjerg. Flexible hours, social activities, and an inclusive work culture are emphasized.
Salary and terms of employment follow the AC collective agreement between the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations and the state. The application must be submitted via Aalborg University’s recruitment system. For further information, contact Michael Ørsted at [email protected].
