About this position

This PhD position at Centrum Wiskunde & Informatica (CWI) focuses on advancing computational imaging for industrial quality control. The project aims to develop technologies for fast, accurate, and automated detection of internal anomalies and defects directly from imaging sensor data in high-throughput industrial workflows. Key challenges include the lack of ground truth data for supervised machine learning and limited signal information from high-speed sensor systems. The research will involve designing and implementing data-driven, physics-aware workflows and algorithms, with a strong emphasis on computational imaging (including X-ray tomography and ultrasound) fused with machine learning techniques.

As a PhD student, you will conduct research within the computational imaging group at CWI, collaborating with fellow PhD students and research staff from mathematics, computer science, and imaging science backgrounds. The project is interdisciplinary, involving frequent interaction with consortium partners such as Leiden University, The Hague University of Applied Sciences, and industrial collaborators. You will also contribute to teaching activities at the Mathematical Institute at Utrecht University and participate in scientific dissemination through publications and presentations.

Applicants should have a master’s degree in applied mathematics, computational physics, computer science, or a related discipline, with strong computational skills and preferably experience in machine learning for imaging. Analytical skills, familiarity with imaging technologies (e.g., X-ray tomography, ultrasound), and the ability to work in multidisciplinary teams are essential. English fluency is required.

The position offers a gross monthly salary starting at €3,115 and rising to €3,989 over four years, plus an 8% holiday allowance and an 8.33% year-end bonus. CWI provides flexible working conditions and housing assistance for expat employees. The employment contract begins with an 18-month term, extendable by 30 months upon positive evaluation. CWI is committed to diversity and inclusion, encouraging applications from candidates of all backgrounds.

CWI is the Dutch national research institute for mathematics and computer science, located at Science Park Amsterdam. The institute is internationally oriented, with 160 scientists from 27 countries, and offers an informal atmosphere with short communication lines. For more information about the computational imaging group, visit the group page.

Applications should include a motivation letter, CV, email addresses of two references, grade transcript, a copy of your Master’s thesis, and preferably a list of publications. Apply via the CWI portal by June 30, 2026. For questions, contact Prof. Tristan van Leeuwen at [email protected]. More information about CWI can be found at www.cwi.nl.
