About this position
PhD opportunity at ARCNL, Netherlands in physics-informed machine learning for semiconductor metrology.
This project asks how machine learning and physics can be combined to recover nanoscale information from imperfect images. The research focuses on computational physics, inverse problems, scientific computing, and mathematical modeling, with a strong application to measuring nanometer-scale structures in modern computer chips.
You will develop a novel physics-informed ML approach that integrates physical simulations of the measurement process with inverse reconstruction. A key part of the work is data-driven experimental design: optimizing measurements and configurations to extract the most useful information for reliable parameter reconstruction.
The project is based at ARCNL in Amsterdam Science Park, in close collaboration with ASML, Centrum Wiskunde & Informatica (CWI) with Prof. dr. Tristan van Leeuwen, and the AI4Science Lab, Informatics Institute, University of Amsterdam with dr. Patrick Forré. The environment combines industrial relevance with academic depth in computational science and mathematical modeling.
Eligibility: MSc degree in computer science, machine learning, artificial intelligence, applied mathematics, physics, or a related discipline; Dutch university requirements for PhD entry; strong English; and preferably experience in machine learning, inverse problems, or scientific computing.
Funding: full-time 4-year PhD appointment, gross salary €3,115/month, employment benefits, and support for housing, visa, transport, and furnishing for international candidates.
Deadline: 24 February 2027.
