About this position

Johannes Kepler University Linz is offering a full-time PhD position in the Department of Particulate Flow Modelling for a project on numerical modelling of mass transfer in fluidised beds. The position is part of the FlexCSAR project within a European consortium focused on carbon capture using fluidised bed technology.

The research addresses a key challenge in computational fluid dynamics: modelling hydrodynamics, heat transfer, and mass transfer in fluidised beds without requiring prohibitively fine meshes. The project builds on a novel numerical method inspired by single-phase turbulence theory, aiming to enable coarse-grid simulations with major speed-ups while still capturing relevant heterogeneous structures such as bubbles. The selected PhD researcher will help further develop this theory for reactive gas-particle flows, which are essential for carbon capture applications.

As part of a multidisciplinary team, the PhD student will work closely with experienced researchers and a PostDoc. Main tasks include deriving filtered transport equations for mass transfer, conducting highly resolved simulations, performing data analysis and model development, presenting results in publications and at project meetings, and applying the developed models to carbon capture processes.

The position is based at Johannes Kepler University Linz in Austria, a large campus university with strong research infrastructure and a dynamic academic environment. The contract is full-time for three years, starting 1 December 2026 and ending 30 November 2029. The application deadline is 30 September 2026.

Applicants must hold a completed Master-equivalent degree in Fluid Mechanics, Engineering, Computer Science, Mathematics, or Physics. The university states that the gross minimum salary is €3,776.10 per month (14 times per year) under collective agreement B1.
