About this position

Uppsala University’s Department of Ecology and Genetics is advertising a PhD student position in evolutionary and ecological genetics within the Zooecology research program at the Evolutionary Biology Center in Sweden.

The project focuses on a central question in evolutionary biology: whether evolutionary changes are repeatable and whether the same genes contribute to repeated phenotypic adaptations. The doctoral project will integrate mechanistic insights into phenotypic adaptation with genomic data to understand how species evolve adaptations to changing habitats.

Research will use data from a large-scale Evolve-and-Resequence experiment on the seed beetle Callosobruchus maculatus. Available data include phenotypic measurements, RNA-seq, and DNA pool-seq from multiple time points. The system also offers opportunities for comparative genomics and additional experiments using geographic populations of seed beetles and related species.

The work combines experimental laboratory work and bioinformatic analysis, with emphasis on the latter. The successful candidate may also participate in teaching up to 20%, with employment and funding extended accordingly.

Eligibility requires a master’s degree in evolutionary biology, ecology, bioinformatics, or a related field, or equivalent qualifications through coursework or research experience. Strong understanding of ecology/evolutionary biology/genetics, programming experience, motivation, independence, teamwork, and strong English skills are expected. Experience with statistical analyses of quantitative genetic or population genomic data, bioinformatics pipelines on servers/clusters, and experimental evolution is meritorious.

The position is full-time for four years, starts in 2027 or as agreed, and is located at Uppsala University in Uppsala. Apply through the university recruitment system by 2026-11-01. Application materials include a personal letter, CV, education summary, degree documents, thesis, references, and publications.

Funding details

Fixed-term doctoral employment for four years at 100% full-time. Employment and funding may be extended proportionally for up to 20% teaching duties. Salary follows the established salary scale for doctoral positions.

What's required

Applicants must have a master's degree in evolutionary biology, ecology, bioinformatics or a related field, or at least 240 higher education credits including 60 advanced-level credits and an independent project worth at least 15 credits, or equivalent knowledge through extensive research experience. Candidates who have not yet graduated but are expected to meet the requirements by the start date may apply. The ideal candidate should understand core ecology and/or evolutionary biology/genetics concepts, have programming experience, be motivated and able to work independently and collaboratively, and communicate well in spoken and written English. Meritorious experience includes statistical analyses of quantitative genetic or population genomic data, bioinformatics pipelines on servers and clusters, and experimental evolution or work with genetic lineages.

How to apply

Prepare a personal letter, CV, brief education description, copies of degree certificates and grades, master's thesis, contact details for at least two references, and any publications. Submit the application in Uppsala University's recruitment system before the deadline.
