About this position
SRON - Space Research Organization Netherlands is offering two full-time PhD positions in experimental astronomy, based in Leiden, The Netherlands. The research focuses on the development and evaluation of highly sensitive cryogenic detectors, specifically Microwave Kinetic Inductance Detectors (MKIDs), for the characterization of atmospheres of Earth-like exoplanets. These detectors are at the forefront of astronomical instrumentation, enabling space-based observations that can answer fundamental questions about the presence of life on distant planets.
The project is a collaboration between SRON's Technology Science Group and the Experimental Astronomy group at Delft University of Technology. The research team is diverse, working across the terahertz to visible spectrum, and the PhD students will spend time at both institutes depending on project needs. The project is funded by an ERC Consolidator grant and involves several scientists and engineers working together to push detector technology to its fundamental limits.
PhD students will design and evaluate MKIDs, which are superconducting single photon detectors capable of detecting individual photons and determining their energy. This allows for spectral analysis without dispersive optics and distinguishes signal from dark excitations, resulting in zero dark current. The project aims to demonstrate MKID specifications required for exoplanet characterization from space. One PhD will focus on condensed matter aspects of detector sensitivity, while the other will focus on detector efficiency and large array demonstration. Both will collaborate closely on design, measurement, and data analysis.
The work involves electromagnetic design and simulation, optical design, detector physics, cryogenic experiments, and signal analysis. Applicants should have an MSc degree in (Applied) Physics, Electrical Engineering, or a related field, with a strong interest in detector technology and space instrumentation. Experience in simulation, design, and experimental evaluation of superconducting detectors is advantageous but not required. Good communication skills and the ability to work in a multidisciplinary team are essential.
Successful candidates will be employed by NWO-I (The Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research Institutes) for an initial period of 1.5 years, extendable by 2.5 years after satisfactory performance. The starting salary is €3,115 per year, with additional benefits including an end-of-year bonus, holiday allowance, 42 days of vacation, pension scheme, commuting compensation, parental leave, training opportunities, and flexible working hours.
