About this position

Linköping University in Sweden is advertising a PhD student position in optimal motion planning for drone swarms within the new national Center for Heterogeneous Adaptive Swarm Systems (CHASS). The project sits in the Division of Automatic Control at the Department of Electrical Engineering (ISY) and is part of a broader research effort in AI, autonomous systems, robotics, swarm intelligence, autonomy, localization, mapping, navigation, and human-swarm interaction.

The specific research focus is uncertainty-aware, optimization-based motion planning at the control and planning layer. The successful candidate will work on scalable trajectory optimization and real-time Model Predictive Control (MPC) strategies that use the swarm’s belief state to improve safety, maximize information gain, and achieve reliable goal completion. The work is especially relevant for GNSS-denied environments and applications such as search and rescue and environmental surveillance.

This is a full-time PhD employment. The position normally lasts four years, with possible extension up to five years depending on teaching and departmental duties. PhD students may also have up to 20% teaching or other duties. Salary is determined according to a locally negotiated salary progression.

Eligibility highlights: applicants should hold an advanced degree in Electrical Engineering, Engineering Physics, Computer Science, Engineering Mathematics, or have equivalent knowledge. The post also requires strong analytical skills, initiative, independence, structured work habits, responsibility, and excellent English communication skills.

Deadline: 23 November 2026. How to apply: submit your application through Linköping University’s online application portal via the Apply button. Background screening may be carried out before appointment.
