About this position
Postdoctoral position in Robotics and Artificial Intelligence at Luleå University of Technology, Sweden.
This opening is for a postdoc in the Robotics and Artificial Intelligence (RAI) group in the Department of Computer Science, Electrical and Space Engineering. The project focuses on robotics, artificial intelligence, SLAM, localisation, mapping, sensor fusion, and control for field robots operating in GPS-denied environments.
Research topics include radar-inertial SLAM and odometry, multi-modal SLAM combining lidar, radar, RGB cameras and thermal cameras, evaluation of SLAM in dust/smoke-filled environments, and cooperative missions between ground robots and quadrotor drones, including collision avoidance and landing an aerial robot on a ground robot carrier under uncertainty.
The work is strongly experimental and includes real-robot testing and field experiments in underground and other challenging environments. The group has participated in the DARPA Subterranean Challenge with the CoSTAR team led by NASA/JPL, and its applications include mining robotics, aerial inspection of ageing infrastructure, space robotics autonomy, and multi-robot search and rescue.
This is a full-time, fixed-term postdoctoral position for two years, with the possibility of extension to a maximum of three years. The position is based in Luleå. Salary is provided according to the university’s preliminary salary range for the role.
Eligibility highlights: a PhD or equivalent in robotics, automatic control, computer science, electrical engineering, or a related subject; strong knowledge of state estimation and SLAM, sensor fusion, or aerial robot control; proven experimental results on real robots; C++ and Python programming; ROS/ROS 2; and good English. Experience with radar/thermal cameras, multi-sensor calibration, safety-critical control, quadrotor flight experiments, or underground field experiments is a merit.
To apply, submit a cover letter, CV with publications, verified degree certificates, a research plan (max two pages), and two references. Applications and certificates must be in Swedish or English. Use reference number 5207-2026. Deadline: 15 November 2026.
