About this position

The Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI), Switzerland's largest research institute for natural and engineering sciences, invites applications for a PhD Student position in Thin Film Condensed Matter Physics as part of the Swiss National Centre of Competence in Research (NCCR) Muoniverse. PSI is renowned for its cutting-edge research in future technologies, energy and climate, health innovation, and the fundamentals of nature, and is committed to training the next generation of scientists.

This PhD position is embedded within Muoniverse, a collaborative network of 30 research teams from universities, research institutions, and museums, dedicated to advancing muon science across particle physics, quantum materials, and diverse applications. The Muoniverse Research School supports training, exchanges, and career development for PhD students and postdocs, fostering a highly interdisciplinary and inclusive environment.

The successful candidate will develop a thin-film preparation chamber, study thin-film and hybrid interfaces of quantum materials, and perform advanced experimental techniques such as low-energy muon-spin spectroscopy (LE-μSR) and beta-detected NMR (β-NMR) on thin films. The role includes active participation in the LEM group at PSI and the β-NMR group at CERN, as well as involvement in teaching and graduate school activities at the University of Zurich.

Applicants should hold a Master’s degree (or equivalent) in Physics, demonstrate a strong interest in instrumentation, data analysis, and experimental techniques, and have a background in condensed matter physics or materials science. Programming skills in C++, Python, and ROOT are highly valued. Proficiency in English (spoken and written) is required.

The position offers a full-time contract (41.5 hours per week), systematic on-the-job training, personal development opportunities, and modern employment conditions.
