About this position
The Max Born Institute for Nonlinear Optics and Short Pulse Spectroscopy in Berlin is recruiting a PhD student (m/f/d) for the joint German-French project FEMTO-switch on the ultrafast dynamics of photoswitches.
This project is funded jointly by DFG and ANR and focuses on understanding how chemical structure governs molecular energetics and excited-state dynamics of ultrafast photoswitches at conical intersections. The advertised work is experimental and will use femtosecond UV/VIS/NIR spectroscopy and photoelectron spectroscopy in the liquid phase, coupled with quantum chemistry calculations.
The specific research aims include developing time-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy (TRPES) in liquid phase with UV pump and XUV probe, particularly for low-concentration biomimetic chromophores. The position also includes investigation of oxindole-based and oxopyrrole-based chromophores, with expected outcomes such as improved sensitivity and stability of TRPES across solvents, robust protocols for biomimetic samples, and combined experimental/theoretical insight into novel photo-switches.
The project is methodologically centered on time-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy in liquid phase using femtosecond XUV pulses. It is well suited to applicants interested in ultrafast laser science, molecular photophysics, and spectroscopy of chemically complex systems.
Eligibility requirements specify a Master’s or Diploma degree in chemistry or physics, along with good knowledge of femtosecond molecular dynamics and ultrafast laser physics. Prior experience in ultrafast spectroscopy is advantageous. Very good written and spoken English is required.
The position is available immediately and is offered for 3 years. Salary follows the German TVöD scheme for scientists in public research institutions, with a 75% part-time appointment for PhD students.
Official supervision will be provided by Dr. Oleg Kornilov at the Max Born Institute, with affiliation to the physics department of Freie Universität Berlin.
Applications must be submitted electronically through the MBI online recruiting platform. Applicants should upload a cover letter explaining their interest in the position, a curriculum vitae, certificates, and a description of previous professional activities. The advertisement is open until 8 November 2026.
