About this position

PhD position in miRNA variant functional genomics at the Institute of Bioorganic Chemistry, Polish Academy of Sciences (Poznań, Poland)

This PhD project focuses on the global analysis of the functional consequences of sequence variants in microRNA (miRNA) genes, with emphasis on pathogenicity, cancer relevance, and non-coding genome interpretation. The research addresses an important gap in genomic medicine: while many variant-effect tools exist for protein-coding genes, miRNA genes require specialized approaches because their biological effects depend on precursor structure, processing, conservation, and miRNA:target interactions.

The successful candidate will join a young and dynamic research team led by Dr Paulina Gałka-Marciniak at the Institute of Bioorganic Chemistry, Polish Academy of Sciences. The project combines wet-lab molecular biology with opportunities to gain experience in bioinformatics and large-scale data analysis. Planned work includes high-throughput CRISPR-based genome editing of miRNA genes and analysis using a single-cell sequencing platform to measure variant effects together with transcriptomic changes across many cells.

The aim is to build an evidence-based framework for interpreting miRNA variants and prioritizing variants with likely functional or pathogenic impact. The resulting scoring system is expected to support future research and potential clinical applications in diagnostics, risk stratification, and precision oncology.

Funding: The PhD student will receive a stipend of approximately 5555 PLN gross per month (4930 PLN net) for 48 months, with the possibility of an increase after the mid-term evaluation up to 5750 PLN gross, according to the director’s decision. The research is funded through a National Science Center project, not an EU programme.

Eligibility highlights: Applicants should have an MSc degree in biology, biotechnology, or a related field, or meet the applicable legal conditions for doctoral admission. Prior laboratory experience in molecular biology, genetics, or biotechnology is expected, with cell culture, electrophoresis, RNA isolation/purification, and basic bioinformatics being advantageous. Very good spoken and written English is required.
