The Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU) is offering a fully funded PhD student position in Microbiology, with a focus on anaerobic cultivation and molecular methods. The position is based at the Department of Molecular Sciences in Uppsala, Sweden, within a vibrant research environment at the BioCenter. The research group specializes in microbial biotechnology, exploring how syntrophic microorganisms collaborate to drive sustainable energy solutions such as biogas production and bioelectrochemical systems.

The project aims to investigate cell communication in closely interacting microbial communities, using advanced anaerobic cultivation techniques and omics-based approaches (metatranscriptomics and metaproteomics). The goal is to uncover molecular mechanisms that enable microbial cooperation, develop innovative cultivation systems, and contribute to more robust and efficient biogas systems, supporting the transition to a sustainable, circular bioeconomy.

Applicants must have a Master’s degree (or equivalent) in microbiology, molecular biotechnology, microbial biotechnology, or a related field. Required skills include hands-on experience in microbial cultivation (especially anaerobic), practical molecular biology techniques, and basic bioinformatics knowledge. Fluency in spoken and written English is essential. Additional merits include experience with molecular methods, oral presentations, scientific writing, and strong analytical and collaborative abilities.

The position is a 4-year doctoral employment at 100% scope, with salary and benefits according to SLU guidelines. There are no tuition fees for doctoral students in Sweden.
