The Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU) is offering a fully funded PhD student position in microbiology, with a strong focus on molecular and microbial sciences. The position is based at the Department of Molecular Sciences in Uppsala, Sweden, within an inspiring research environment at the BioCenter. The research group specializes in microbial biotechnology, exploring how syntrophic microorganisms collaborate to drive sustainable energy solutions, such as biogas production and bioelectrochemical systems.

The project investigates cell communication in closely interacting microbial communities, using advanced anaerobic cultivation techniques and omics-based approaches (metatranscriptomics and metaproteomics) to uncover molecular mechanisms of microbial cooperation. The goal is to develop innovative cultivation systems and molecular tools to study these interactions, ultimately contributing to more robust and efficient biogas systems and supporting the transition to a sustainable, circular bioeconomy.

Applicants should have a Master’s degree (or equivalent) in microbiology, molecular biotechnology, microbial biotechnology, or a related field, and be fluent in English. Experience with microbial cultivation (especially anaerobic), molecular methods, and basic bioinformatics is meriting. The position is open to international candidates and offers a collaborative, inclusive academic environment with access to advanced research infrastructure.

The PhD position is a 4-year, full-time employment with salary and benefits according to university guidelines. No tuition fees are required for doctoral students.
