About this position
PhD Studentship in Actuated Microdevices for Oral Delivery of Biologics at the University of Birmingham.
This project addresses a major challenge in pharmaceutical delivery: many biologic drugs cannot be taken orally because the gastrointestinal tract blocks their passage. The research will explore how actively controlled mechanical stimulation can help drug molecules cross the intestinal wall while accounting for the mucus barrier and tight epithelial junctions. The student will design, microfabricate, and characterise an actuator capable of delivering controlled vibration to intestinal tissue, with the goal of exploiting the shear-thinning and thixotropic properties of mucus.
The work is highly interdisciplinary and combines microfabrication, actuator design, finite element modelling, mucus rheology, ex vivo tissue methods, cell culture, and testing on benchtop intestinal models. You will gain hands-on experience in cleanroom processes and work across engineering and life sciences, with strong relevance to future careers in healthcare technology and medical devices.
The University of Birmingham highlights its translational research environment through the Healthcare Technologies Institute and the Precision Healthcare Technology Accelerator, and the School of Engineering has an established Medical Engineering research group with links to SME and multinational medical device companies.
Funding: This is a fully funded EPSRC studentship. It covers tuition fees at the UK rate and provides a tax-free stipend at the UKRI minimum of £21,805 per year for 3.5 years, alongside a research training support grant for consumables and conference travel.
Eligibility: The team seeks highly motivated applicants with a first-class MEng degree in mechanical, electrical, biomedical, or materials engineering, applied physics, or a closely related subject. Prior experience with MEMS, actuators, COMSOL, or cell culture is desirable but not essential. Applicants should be comfortable with experimental laboratory work and willing to learn biology techniques.
Application: Apply via the University of Birmingham application link. Informal enquiries are welcomed; contact Dr Gerard Cummins by email with a CV and a short statement explaining your interest in the project.
