About this position
PhD opportunity at the University of Birmingham in bioresorbable intestinal devices with embedded resorbable sensors for gastrointestinal monitoring.
This project sits at the intersection of Biomedical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, and Materials Science. The research aims to create an orally delivered, bioresorbable retentive structure that combines flexible printed circuitry with custom microfabricated bioresorbable sensors, then test the device in a simulated intestinal environment. A key scientific challenge is understanding and sequencing the device’s three lifetimes: structural lifetime, sensor lifetime, and retention lifetime.
Students will gain hands-on experience in cleanroom microfabrication, thin-film patterning, sensor design and calibration, finite element modelling, polymer processing, embedded electronics, and ex vivo tissue methods. The project is hosted by the School of Engineering and linked to the University’s Healthcare Technologies Institute, Precision Healthcare Technology Accelerator, and Medical Engineering research group.
Eligibility: applicants should be highly motivated and graduating with a first-class MEng in mechanical, electrical, biomedical, or materials engineering, applied physics, or a closely related subject. Experience with microfabrication, finite element analysis, embedded systems, or thin-film processing is welcome but not required.
Funding: fully funded EPSRC studentship for 3.5 years, covering UK-rate tuition fees and a tax-free stipend at the UKRI minimum (£21,805/year for 2026/27). A research training support grant covers consumables and conference travel. International applicants may apply, though places are restricted due to EPSRC cohort limits.
Application: register interest through FindAPhD or email Dr Gerard Cummins with a CV and a short statement of interest. The listed deadline is 2027-01-07.
