The Department of Chemical Engineering at University College London (UCL) is offering a fully funded 4-year PhD studentship focused on developing AI-powered approaches for Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) of emerging clean technologies. The project aims to address the challenges faced by LCA practitioners, such as inconsistent environmental data and time-consuming manual processes, by creating an AI-driven workflow that automates and accelerates the entire LCA process. Real-world case studies will include next-generation solar cells and batteries, offering hands-on experience with cutting-edge technologies.
The research will evaluate how AI integration can improve the speed, consistency, reproducibility, and quality of LCA compared to traditional expert-driven methods. The project is ideal for candidates passionate about sustainability, environmental modelling, artificial intelligence, and emerging technologies.
Eligibility and Requirements: Applicants should hold, or be about to complete, an upper second-class or higher degree at MEng or MSc level in a quantitative discipline such as chemical or environmental engineering, physics, computer science, or a closely related field. Experience with LCA or machine learning/AI models is desirable. Candidates must be able to work independently and as part of a collaborative team. Funding covers UK-equivalent tuition fees and a stipend of approximately £23,805 per annum; overseas applicants must secure additional funding for the fee difference.
