ARIES funding does not cover relocation, visa, or health surcharge costs.] This PhD studentship at the University of East Anglia investigates the chemical and isotopic markers of deforestation in global food supply chains, with a particular focus on Forest Risk Commodities (FRCs) such as soy, palm oil, and coffee. The project responds to the urgent need for scientific methods to verify the origins of FRCs and support deforestation-free supply chains, in light of new EU Deforestation Regulations. The research will employ advanced analytical methodologies, including stable isotope analysis and high-throughput spectroscopic techniques, to detect and identify trace chemical signatures left by land-use changes such as forest clearing and burning. Training will be provided in instrumental analysis using the UEA Science Analytical Facilities, as well as in data science approaches like multivariate analysis, machine learning, and AI for interpreting complex datasets. The student will benefit from interdisciplinary supervision across the Schools of Chemistry, Pharmacy & Pharmacology, and Environmental Sciences, gaining experience in both laboratory and computational research. Two three-month secondments at Fera Science in York will provide access to industry expertise and instrumentation within the Food Authenticity team. The project also offers opportunities for networking with collaborative partners such as World Forest ID and other stakeholders. Applicants should have a strong background in chemical or environmental analysis, numeracy, and ideally experience in statistical or mathematical programming. Entry requirements include a UK equivalent Bachelors (Honours) 2:1 degree in a relevant subject and English language proficiency (IELTS 6.5 overall, 6 in each category). The studentship is fully funded for eligible UK and international candidates, covering tuition fees, a maintenance stipend (£20,780 p.a. for 2025/26), and a research training and support grant. International students may have the fee difference waived, but relocation, visa, and health surcharge costs are not covered.
