About this position

[£20,780 per annum stipend.]

This fully funded PhD studentship at Hartpury University and College, in partnership with the University of the West of England (awarding body), offers an exciting opportunity to investigate the saliva-gut microbiome of dairy cows and calves as an indicator of health and wellbeing. The project aims to characterise microbial communities along the gastrointestinal tract and assess their association with animal health and production performance, contributing valuable insights to the fields of animal science, microbiology, and agriculture.

The studentship provides a stipend of £20,780 per annum. Applicants must meet specific eligibility criteria: you must be currently or formerly employed in, or related to, the wholesale or retail sale or delivery of milk in the Metropolitan Police area of London, or be the spouse, descendant, or dependent of such a person. Academic requirements include an undergraduate degree or MSc in a relevant field, strong communication and analytical skills, and ideally experience in research or practical settings. Non-native English speakers must provide evidence of English proficiency (minimum IELTS 7.0, TOEFL 600, or equivalent).

To apply, submit a CV (maximum 3 pages), academic transcripts, a covering letter addressing the eligibility criteria, and a relevant dissertation or research sample to [email protected]. If applicable, include English language certification. The application deadline is midnight (UK time) on 1st June 2026. Shortlisted candidates will be invited for interview on 29th June 2026, and all applicants must ensure their availability on this date.

For further information or an initial discussion, contact Dr Lisa Williams at [email protected]. This studentship is ideal for candidates passionate about animal health, microbiome research, and the dairy industry, seeking to develop advanced research skills in a supportive academic environment.
