About this position

[Fully funded studentship covering fees, maintenance stipend of £21,805 p.a. for 2026/27, and a research training and support grant (RTSG). Limited international applicants may have the home/international fee difference waived; relocation, visa, and health surcharge costs are not covered.]

PhD opportunity at the University of East Anglia in the ARIES programme on the formation, emplacement, and ore-forming processes of the Rogaland Anorthosite Complex in southern Norway.

This project investigates one of Earth’s most unusual intrusive rock types, anorthosite, which is characterised by an almost monomineralic plagioclase composition and remains important to debates on magmatic processes, crustal versus mantle sources, and emplacement mechanisms. The study focuses on the Egersund-Ogna massif, the largest massif-type anorthosite complex in Europe, and its associated Fe-Ti oxide ore bodies.

The research will combine fieldwork, petrography, electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD), magnetic fabric analysis, electron microprobe work, and mineral chemistry to address questions about magma flow regimes, emplacement of the massif, and the relationship between lenticular ore bodies and the broader plutonic architecture. Fieldwork in southwest Norway is planned for year 1.

The student will receive bespoke training in digital and traditional mapping, petrology, advanced microstructural analysis, and rock magnetic techniques, working closely with supervisors in modern laboratory facilities. In addition, the student will have access to the ARIES training programme for wider research and professional skills development.

Eligibility: applicants should hold a BSc/MSc in Geology or a related discipline, and should demonstrate enthusiasm for fieldwork, strong motivation, and interest in petrography and structural geology. The project encourages candidates who want to develop the project around their own research interests.

Funding: eligible candidates will receive a fully funded studentship covering tuition fees, a maintenance stipend of £21,805 p.a. for 2026/27, and a research training and support grant (RTSG). A limited number of places are available for international applicants, with the home/international fee difference waived, though relocation, visa, and health surcharge costs are not covered.

Deadline: 23:59 on 16 December 2026.
