About this position

[Fully funded studentship covering fees, maintenance stipend of £21,805 p.a. for 2026/27, and a research training and support grant (RTSG). Limited international places available with home/international fee difference waived; relocation, visa, and UK health surcharge costs are not covered.]

PhD studentship in volcanology and seismic imaging at the University of East Anglia

This PhD project investigates the magmatic plumbing system of the Eastern Caribbean volcanic arc, with an initial focus on Saint Vincent and the broader island-arc crust. The research addresses an important volcanology problem: understanding how volcanic unrest can evolve from effusive to eruptive activity, and how geophysical observations can improve hazard forecasting and management.

The project will use seismic datasets from the Seismic Research Centre at the University of the West Indies, alongside recordings from a large seismic experiment in 2026. The successful candidate will apply ambient noise tomography to image the shallow upper crust and identify temporal changes in structure, and may also use local earthquake tomography to extend seismic velocity models into the lower crust. These models will then be integrated with density and electrical resistivity data, petrological constraints on magma sources, and potentially new satellite geodetic observations to infer the depth and evolution of magmatic pressurization sources.

The project sits within a large multidisciplinary research team recently funded by NERC and offers training in seismic data processing, tomographic imaging, and numerical modelling, together with broader environmental science training through ARIES. There are opportunities for collaborative travel to the Seismic Research Centre.

This is a fully funded PhD studentship subject to UKRI terms and conditions. Funding includes full fees, a maintenance stipend of £21,805 per year for 2026/27, and a research training and support grant (RTSG). A limited number of places are available for international applicants, with the difference between home and international tuition fees waived by the university; however, relocation, visa, and UK health surcharge costs are not covered.

Applicants should hold a degree in geoscience or a related discipline. Numerical literacy and experience with coding tools and Unix-based operating systems are desirable. The application deadline is 16 December 2026. Apply via the University of East Anglia postgraduate research application portal and complete the ARIES Equality and Diversity Form after submitting your project application.
