About this position

PhD opportunity at the University of East Anglia in the School of Environmental Sciences: Listening to La Soufrière: Fibre Optics and AI for the Next Generation of Volcano Monitoring.

This project sits within the NERC Large Grant Expecting the Unexpected (Ex-X): Understanding Dangerous Volcanic Transitions and focuses on improving volcano monitoring and hazard assessment for La Soufrière, St Vincent. The research uses Distributed Acoustic Sensing (DAS), fibre-optic telecommunications cables, machine learning, signal processing, seismology, volcanology, and geophysical imaging to detect, classify, and characterise earthquakes and volcanic unrest.

The successful candidate will develop automated workflows for continuous DAS data from St Vincent, integrate DAS observations with the University of the West Indies Seismic Research Centre network and dense nodal deployments, improve earthquake location methods, apply ambient-noise imaging to study subsurface structure, and evaluate how DAS can support operational volcano monitoring. Fieldwork in St Vincent is included, and the student will spend time embedded in an operational volcano observatory through a CASE partnership.

Training includes seismology, volcanology, DAS, machine learning, scientific programming, and geophysical imaging. Applicants should have at least a 2:1 degree in geophysics or a related discipline; coding, data analysis, or machine learning experience is desirable, and an interest in geohazards and interdisciplinary research is essential. English language requirement: IELTS 6.5 overall with 6 in each category.

This is a funded PhD project open to students worldwide. Mode of study can be full-time or part-time. Start date: 1 October 2027.
