About this position

This fully funded PhD studentship at Newcastle University offers an exciting opportunity to investigate hypoxia-driven fibroblast reprogramming in immunotherapy-resistant primary liver cancer. The project is based in the Biosciences Institute and supervised by Dr J Leslie, Dr B Ortmann, and Dr U Jungwirth, who are experts in cancer biology, cell biology, and immunology. Primary liver cancer is a rapidly increasing cause of cancer-related mortality worldwide, and understanding the mechanisms of immunotherapy resistance is crucial for developing new therapeutic strategies.

The research will focus on the tumor microenvironment, specifically how hypoxic conditions influence fibroblast behavior and contribute to resistance against immunotherapy. You will employ advanced molecular and cellular biology techniques to dissect the pathways involved, with the aim of identifying novel targets for intervention. The project is highly interdisciplinary, combining cancer biology, immunology, and translational research, and offers opportunities for collaboration within Newcastle University and with external partners.

The studentship covers home fees and provides a UKRI rate stipend (£22,500 for 2026/27), ensuring financial support throughout your studies.
