About this position

PhD Studentship in Chemical Engineering and PVC Recycling at the University of Nottingham (UK) within the EPSRC/BBSRC Centre for Doctoral Training in Negative Emission Technologies for Net Zero (Net2Zero).

This doctoral project sits at the intersection of chemical engineering, analytical chemistry, environmental science, and materials science. The CDT is a partnership between Aston University (lead), University of Nottingham, Queen’s University Belfast, and University of Warwick. It trains doctoral researchers working on greenhouse-gas removal, biomass transition, CO₂ capture/utilisation, biochar, and related negative-emission technologies. Students benefit from interdisciplinary training, access to cutting-edge facilities, networking with academia/industry/government, and a three-month placement with industry, research collaborators, or policymakers.

Supervisors listed are Dr Mohamad Adam, Dr Will Meredith, and Dr John Robinson (Halocycle Ltd). Halocycle is a UK-based advanced plastic recycling company developing microwave technology to selectively remove chlorine and other harmful components from PVC and recycle it into valuable materials and chemicals.

Eligibility highlights: applicants should have strong skills in chemical engineering and analytical chemistry or related disciplines, teamwork and communication skills, and a strong safety record. A relevant Master’s degree (or equivalent) with at least 60% weighted average, or a First/Upper Second Class Honours degree, is expected. This opportunity is for home fee status candidates only and is fully funded.

Funding details
