About this position

PhD Position in Electrical Engineering at the University of Nottingham (UK) within the Net2Zero Centre for Doctoral Training.

This doctoral project sits in the broader area of electrical engineering, materials science, and chemical engineering, with a strong sustainability and environmental science focus. The research aims to demonstrate energy-efficient oxyfuel combustion of biomass using oxygen separation membranes. You will work on mixed ionic-electronic conductors (MIECs), develop high-performance and stable oxide-ion/electronic materials, manufacture ceramic tube membranes, and test oxygen production for biomass oxyfuel combustion. The post also connects to carbon capture and negative emissions themes, including CO2 storage, CO2 utilisation, and BECCS.

The CDT is a collaboration between Aston University (lead), University of Nottingham, Queen’s University Belfast, and University of Warwick, with industrial collaboration from Nanodot Ltd. Students benefit from interdisciplinary training, access to facilities, networking with academia/industry/government, entrepreneurship and communication skills development, and a 3-month placement with industry or collaborators.

Supervisors: Prof. Hao Liu and Prof. Eleanor Binner.

Funding: Four-year UKRI studentship stipend (£21,383 per year for 2026/27), paid tuition fees, and a Research Training Support Grant.

Eligibility: First-class or upper second-class honours degree (or equivalent), or an MSc with 60%+ weighted average; knowledge of ceramic manufacturing; experience characterising ionic/electronic conductivity, crystal structure, and chemical composition. Open to home fee status candidates only.

Funding details

Full funding including tuition fees and living expenses is available for this position. The scholarship covers all educational costs and provides a monthly stipend.
