About this position

Bath Engineering & Design Studentships at the University of Bath are offering a PhD project on smart water-resilient housing: An Occupant-led, Lifecycle Toolkit for Climate-Resilient Homes and Neighbourhoods.

This interdisciplinary project sits in the Department of Architecture & Civil Engineering and explores how building performance assessment, smart water data, environmental monitoring, artificial intelligence, and occupant feedback can support homes and neighbourhoods facing drought, extreme heat, water scarcity, and intense rainfall.

The research links design-stage water efficiency with construction, occupation, maintenance, and retrofit. It will examine how occupancy and environmental conditions affect water and hot-water consumption, how leaks and abnormal performance can be detected earlier, and how household and neighbourhood interventions can improve water efficiency, climate preparedness, affordability, and wellbeing.

The project also considers the water-energy-carbon nexus, privacy-preserving evidence for housing designers and providers, and the potential for decision-support tools to inform water companies, infrastructure planning, housing standards, and policy.

This is a competition funded PhD studentship for students worldwide. Funding includes tuition fees, a £1,000 annual training support fee, and a maintenance stipend of £21,805 (2026/27 rate). Home and Overseas applicants may be considered, though Overseas places are capped. International students must fund their visa and Immigration Health Surcharge.

Applicants should have, or be about to obtain, a UK 1st or 2.1 honours degree or international equivalent. A master’s degree is advantageous. Relevant backgrounds include architecture, construction, building services, civil or environmental engineering, housing studies, data science, sustainability, human-computer interaction, or related fields. Experience with quantitative, qualitative, or mixed-method research, digital technologies in buildings or environmental monitoring, and the ability to work across technical and social disciplines are all important.

Informal enquiries can be directed to Dr Kemi Adeyeye. Formal applications must be submitted through the University of Bath online PhD application form for Architecture. Applicants must select University of Bath URSA in the funding section and enter the project title and intended supervisor exactly as instructed.

Deadline shown on the listing: 29 November 2026.
