About this position
PhD Studentship at the University of Nottingham in the Power Electronics and Machines Centre / PEMC Research Group.
This project focuses on insulation reliability for next-generation electric motors used in automotive and aerospace applications. The research addresses the challenges created by higher power density, higher efficiency, higher operating voltage, wide-bandgap converters, and fast-switching waveforms, which place severe electrical stress on winding insulation. A particular emphasis is placed on partial discharge, insulation degradation, endurance, and lifetime prediction under realistic electrical, thermal, pressure, and mechanical conditions.
The successful PhD candidate will combine experimental testing with insulation lifetime modelling to study PD inception and degradation mechanisms, including emerging hairpin and Litz-wire technologies. The work aims to improve insulation design and qualification for safer and higher-performance electrified transport systems.
Eligibility and requirements: applicants should hold a relevant master’s degree in engineering or physical sciences such as electrical/electronic engineering, mechatronics, physics, materials science/engineering, or mechanical/aerospace engineering. Experience in high-voltage engineering, electrical machines, power electronics, dielectric materials, COMSOL Multiphysics, MATLAB, programming, or experimental hardware is advantageous. Strong analytical, mathematical, communication, and scientific writing skills are expected.
