About this position

This project focuses on next-generation computational fluid dynamics (CFD), multi-physics modelling, and physics-informed artificial intelligence for particle-based long-duration energy storage (LDES) systems. The research will study transient thermo-fluid behaviour, heat transfer, particle transport, turbulent flow, thermal stratification, and dynamic system response under variable renewable energy conditions.
The student will develop high-fidelity CFD models and integrate Physics-Informed Neural Networks (PINNs), reduced-order modelling, and AI-enabled digital twin approaches for simulation acceleration, real-time monitoring, optimisation, fault detection, and adaptive control. The project is positioned at the intersection of energy storage, turbulence, heat transfer, particle-fluid interactions, and data-driven engineering.
The successful candidate will join an internationally leading research team at the University of Manchester and work within a major international consortium involving UK industrial partners and more than 20 academic and research institutions across the UK, Europe, and the USA. The project offers exposure to large-scale experimental facilities, industrial datasets, and advanced computational platforms.
Funding: tuition fees are covered at the UK home student rate and the student will receive a tax-free stipend at the UKRI rate (£21,805 for 2026/27). International applicants are welcome, but the difference between home and international tuition fees, plus any additional associated costs, must be covered separately.
