About this position

University of Hong Kong (HKU) and the Max Planck Institute for Demographic Research (MPIDR) are inviting applications for a 4-year PhD studentship in Population Studies. This is a joint doctoral opportunity between the HKU Faculty of Social Sciences / HKU Research Hub of Population Studies and the MPIDR Department of Digital and Computational Demography.

The project is broad and not limited to a single topic. Applicants are encouraged to propose population-related research aligned with the strengths of HKU and MPIDR, including demography, migration, fertility, longevity, population health, digital and computational demography, and related social science questions. The student will be registered full-time at HKU, enrolled in the International Max Planck Research School for Population, Health, and Data Science, and co-supervised by supervisors at both institutions.

The training structure is international: the first 2 years are spent in Hong Kong at HKU, followed by 2 years in Germany at MPIDR in Rostock. At MPIDR, the student may be affiliated with the Lab of Migration and Mobility or the Lab of Population Dynamics and Sustainable Well-being, depending on fit and interest. The programme leads to a PhD degree from HKU.

Funding: During the HKU period, selected students receive a Postgraduate Scholarship (PGS) of HK$19,135 per month, plus possible travel and conference support. During the Germany period, the student receives a gross salary of EUR 40,617 per year and additional support for travel, training, and data acquisition. Students must pay the HKU composition fee; there are no fees to MPIDR.

Eligibility and application: Applicants must meet the admission requirements of both institutions. A full HKU PhD application (Form A) and a separate studentship application (Form B) are both required by 2026-12-01. Supporting documents include an academic CV, a personal statement (800–1000 words), and a PhD proposal summary (maximum two pages), in addition to HKU Graduate School requirements.

Contacts: Guy Abel (HKU) and Emilio Zagheni (MPIDR) are listed for informal enquiries.
