About this position

This four-year PhD studentship, funded by an ERC grant, offers an exciting opportunity to investigate rapid evolution in ecological communities. Hosted at the Laboratory of Experimental Ecology within the Institute of Entomology, Biology Centre, Czech Academy of Sciences, the project explores the interface of population genetics and community ecology. The research focuses on how rapid evolutionary changes affect host-parasite interactions and the stability and diversity of entire communities, using a novel experimental model system of wild Drosophila species and their parasitoids from tropical Australia.

Through multigenerational laboratory microcosm experiments, the student will track eco-evolutionary dynamics in fine detail, employing approaches such as experimental community evolution, population genomics, and eco-evolutionary modelling. The specific PhD project will be tailored in discussion with the supervisor, Dr Jan Hrcek, and may involve collaboration with international researchers and a research stay abroad.

The laboratory is a multinational team of postdocs, PhD students, and technicians, providing a stimulating and supportive environment. The Biology Centre is located in České Budějovice, a safe, middle-sized city with a relaxed atmosphere, historical centre, and beautiful countryside. The city offers a vibrant international expert community and numerous opportunities for research and leisure activities.

Applicants must hold an MSc degree to enter the PhD programme in the Czech Republic. Experience with laboratory experiments, population genetics or molecular ecology, and eco-evolutionary dynamics or population genetic modelling is advantageous. The working language is English, and candidates from all countries are welcome. The position includes a guaranteed salary by Czech law, comfortably covering living expenses, and benefits such as paid holiday, subsidized lunches, pension insurance, health insurance, social security, free Czech language classes, professional training, mentoring, and support for leisure and cultural activities. Additional support is provided for foreigners, including visa application, relocation, and settlement assistance.
