About this position

PhD studentship at University College Dublin / UCD Michael Smurfit Graduate Business School in Ireland on Responsible Finance & Securitized Loans. This industry-embedded project is in collaboration with Crystal Fund and affiliated with ADAPT, a Research Ireland-funded research centre.

The research examines the first environmental finance study of carbon-risk considerations in the Collateralized Loan Obligation (CLO) market, using unique proprietary transaction data to understand how environmental factors influence CLO managers’ loan trading decisions and how carbon risk is priced and managed in global credit markets.

This is a fully funded 4-year PhD studentship with a tax-free stipend of €25,000 per annum and EU/non-EU fees covered. The position is full-time and in-person in Dublin.

Applicants should have, or expect to obtain before enrolment, a first-class or upper second-class honours degree and preferably a Master’s degree in Finance, Economics, Econometrics, Quantitative Finance, Statistics, Mathematics, Data Science, Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field. Strong quantitative and analytical skills, excellent English communication, and interest in financial intermediation, credit markets, sustainable finance, and environmental risk are expected. Experience with or willingness to learn Python, R, Stata, or MATLAB is also requested.

Supervision is by Prof Cal Muckley (UCD), with academic co-supervisors Prof Fabiola Schneider (UCD) and Prof Xing Huan (EDHEC), plus industry co-supervisor Dr Pierre-Olivier Fortin (Crystal Fund). Separate admission to the UCD Structured PhD programme is required.

Apply by 21 August 2026 by emailing a single PDF to [email protected] with the subject line PhD - Responsible Finance & Securitized Loans. Include a one-page letter of interest, CV, transcripts, and two references.
