About this position
PhD Studentship at The University of Manchester within the RAINZ CDT (Robotics and Artificial Intelligence for Net Zero) on Uncertainty-Driven Autonomy and acting on uncertainty in prognostics and health management of complex assets.
This project sits at the intersection of Robotics, Artificial Intelligence, autonomous systems, and engineering for net zero. The CDT focuses on how robotics and autonomous systems can support inspection, maintenance, and repair of infrastructure in renewables (wind, solar, geothermal, tidal, hydrogen) and nuclear (fission and fusion), as well as the decarbonisation of existing maintenance and decommissioning of assets.
The programme is a 1+3 structure: Year 1 is a taught MSc component and bespoke CDT training at Manchester, followed by PhD research in Years 2–4 at The University of Manchester, University of Glasgow, or University of Oxford. Students must achieve an average of 65% or higher in MSc assessments to progress to the PhD stage.
Funding includes Home tuition fees, a tax-free stipend at the UKRI minimum rate (£21,805 for 2026/27), and a Research Training and Support Grant for travel, consumables, conference attendance, secondments, and other research/training activities. Additional support may be available for CDT activities, specialised equipment, and accessibility needs. Funding is provided by BAE Systems and is subject to confirmation by the industry partner.
Eligibility: First or strong Upper Second-class honours degree (2:1 with 65% average), or international equivalent, in Engineering, Computer Science, Physics, Mathematics, or a related discipline. Programming experience is required.
