About this position

Postdoctoral opportunity at the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility (ESRF) in Grenoble, France, within the X-ray Diffraction and Scattering Group. The position is based on beamline ID10-SURF, a surface scattering station dedicated to studies of hard and soft condensed matter surfaces and interfaces using techniques such as X-ray reflectivity (XRR), grazing incidence WAXS, grazing incidence SAXS, and complementary methods including XRF and XANES.

The successful candidate will participate in beamline operation, support external users as a local contact, and develop an independent research programme focused on the interactions between biological membrane mimics at liquid interfaces and macromolecules, including polymers and proteins, using X-ray surface scattering. The role also involves working with beamline scientists on advanced, physically and chemically consistent data analysis strategies and on the development of sample cells tailored to the beamline.

Current in-house research topics at ID10 include Langmuir films mimicking cell membranes, nanoparticle assembly at liquid interfaces, and catalysis, including CVD growth of 2D materials on liquid metal catalysts and Fischer–Tropsch synthesis. The station features a double crystal deflector (DCD), enabling studies of liquid surfaces and buried interfaces, and includes sample environments such as a Langmuir trough and a reactor for CVD growth.

Applicants should hold a PhD in Physics, Chemistry, or a closely related field, obtained within the last 3 years. Required experience includes instrumentation, data analysis, surface science, liquid surfaces, soft matter or solid-state physics, and scattering techniques (X-ray or neutron) applied to soft matter or related systems. Basic scattering data modelling skills are essential, and programming experience in Python or MATLAB is expected. The role is full-time and temporary for 18 months, with the possibility of renewal for a further 6 to 18 months. ESRF highlights competitive compensation and allowances, plus relocation support to Grenoble.
