About this position
A post-doctoral research scholarship ("Bolsa de Investigação Pós doutoral") is available at Instituto de Telecomunicações in Lisbon, Portugal, within the ERC-funded LESYNCH project, Limits and Efficiency of Coding Against Synchronization Errors (ERC-2025-STG-101218842).
The project investigates probabilistic methods and tools from pseudorandomness to better understand the limits of coding against synchronization errors and to design improved synchronization error-correcting codes with efficient encoding and decoding. The selected researcher will study the information-theoretic properties and construction of efficient error-correcting codes for channels with shuffling/permutation errors combined with insertions, deletions, and other synchronization errors, including extensions motivated by DNA-based data storage.
The work will be carried out at Instituto de Telecomunicações – Lisboa, in the Security and Quantum Information group (Basic Sciences and Enabling Technologies), under the supervision of Professor Dr. João Ribeiro.
The position is a 12-month scholarship with the possibility of renewal, and the scholarship can have a maximum duration of 3 years. The monthly amount is 3000€, paid by bank transfer according to the institute’s fellowship table. The start date is January 2027 or soon thereafter.
Eligibility highlights include a completed PhD or equivalent and prior research experience in information-theoretic aspects of channels with shuffling/permutation errors. The position is aligned with electronic engineering, communications, coding theory, and related theoretical computer science/mathematics areas.
Applicants must submit a motivation letter, CV, degree certificates, and other supporting documents through the online application system. Email applications will not be considered. Degrees obtained abroad must be recognized by a Portuguese higher education institution under the applicable Portuguese legislation.
The application deadline is 21 October 2026.
