Instituto de Telecomunicações

Post-Doctoral Research Grant in Coding Theory and Synchronization Errors

A postdoctoral research scholarship is available at Instituto de Telecomunicações in Lisboa, Portugal, within the ERC-funded project LESYNCH – Limits and Efficiency of Coding Against Synchronization Errors (ERC-2025-STG – 101218842). The project focuses on the rigorous mathematical and information-theoretic study of communication settings with synchronization errors. The successful candidate will work in the Security and Quantum Information – Lx group and contribute to new results on the limits of coding against synchronization errors, as well as the development of new synchronisation error-correcting code constructions with efficient encoding and decoding algorithms. The position is framed as a one-year postdoctoral research scholarship with the possibility of renewal according to FCT regulations. The expected start date is October 2026 or soon thereafter . The work will be carried out at Instituto de Telecomunicações in Lisboa under the supervision of Professor Dr. João Ribeiro . Eligibility highlights: applicants should hold a PhD or equivalent in Computer Science or a closely related field. The PhD must have been obtained within the last three years, and the candidate’s research must not have been developed at IT. Prior research experience in probabilistic methods in coding theory and in applying pseudo-random techniques to design error-correcting codes with efficient algorithms is specifically requested. Application window: the competition is open from 12 August 2026 to 25 August 2026 . Applications must be submitted online through the IT portal; e-mail submissions are not accepted. Required documents: cover letter, detailed CV with transcripts, and copies of relevant certificates. The degree certificate(s) are required to sign the contract.

Instituto de Telecomunicações

Post-Doctoral Research Grant (Bolsa de Investigação) in Coding Against Synchronization Errors

A post-doctoral research scholarship ("Bolsa de Investigação Pós doutoral") is available at Instituto de Telecomunicações in Lisbon, Portugal, within the ERC-funded LESYNCH project, Limits and Efficiency of Coding Against Synchronization Errors (ERC-2025-STG-101218842). The project investigates probabilistic methods and tools from pseudorandomness to better understand the limits of coding against synchronization errors and to design improved synchronization error-correcting codes with efficient encoding and decoding. The selected researcher will study the information-theoretic properties and construction of efficient error-correcting codes for channels with shuffling/permutation errors combined with insertions, deletions, and other synchronization errors, including extensions motivated by DNA-based data storage. The work will be carried out at Instituto de Telecomunicações – Lisboa, in the Security and Quantum Information group (Basic Sciences and Enabling Technologies), under the supervision of Professor Dr. João Ribeiro. The position is a 12-month scholarship with the possibility of renewal, and the scholarship can have a maximum duration of 3 years. The monthly amount is 3000€, paid by bank transfer according to the institute’s fellowship table. The start date is January 2027 or soon thereafter. Eligibility highlights include a completed PhD or equivalent and prior research experience in information-theoretic aspects of channels with shuffling/permutation errors. The position is aligned with electronic engineering, communications, coding theory, and related theoretical computer science/mathematics areas. Applicants must submit a motivation letter, CV, degree certificates, and other supporting documents through the online application system. Email applications will not be considered. Degrees obtained abroad must be recognized by a Portuguese higher education institution under the applicable Portuguese legislation. The application deadline is 21 October 2026.
