About this position
Post-doctoral researcher contract in climate science and machine learning at the University of the Balearic Islands (Universitat de les Illes Balears, UIB) in Palma, Spain.
This is a full-time postdoc position within the UHEAT project, a joint European-Japanese research collaboration investigating how ocean heat content influences marine heatwaves and their impacts on key fish species. The successful candidate will work on developing a deep-learning system that combines ocean observations and climate data to predict marine heatwave probability, contributing to research with clear relevance to climate change, ocean dynamics, and fisheries impacts.
The position is hosted by the University of the Balearic Islands on Majorca and is associated with PI Dr. Francisco Jaime Mir Calafat. The project is funded by MICIU/AEI and co-financed by the European Union. Salary is listed as €3,000 gross per month plus public health insurance, and compensation may be higher depending on recognised professional experience.
Applicants should hold a PhD or equivalent by the start date in Ocean Science, Physics, Mathematics, or a related field. The role particularly suits candidates with experience in scientific programming, data analysis, spatiotemporal methods, machine learning/deep learning, and work with climate or oceanographic datasets such as observations, reanalysis, or coupled climate model outputs. English proficiency is desirable.
The application deadline is 11 November 2026 at 23:55 (Europe/Madrid), with an expected start date of 11 January 2027. Applications should be submitted through the UIB portal. The selection process includes evaluation of curricular merits, qualifications, experience, a video curriculum and possibly an interview, with a minimum threshold of 60 points. Non-EU degree holders selected for hiring must provide equivalence certification or proof of having applied for it.
Flexible working arrangements may be discussed, including partial work from home, although on-site work is preferred.

What's required
Applicants must have a PhD or equivalent by the contract start date, in Ocean Science, Physics, Mathematics or a related field. Desired skills include the ability to conduct and organise scientific research, scientific programming and data analysis (e.g. Python, Matlab or similar), handling and analysing large or complex scientific datasets, clear scientific writing, and strong communication skills. English skills would be a plus. Preferred experience includes working with climate or oceanographic data (observations, reanalysis products, or outputs from global coupled climate models), spatiotemporal data analysis or spatial statistics, familiarity with machine learning or deep learning methods, and an interest in ocean and climate dynamics. The post indicates 1-4 years of research experience.
How to apply
Apply through the UIB application website. Review the project information and submit the required application materials before the deadline. If selected and holding a non-EU degree, provide proof of equivalence or having applied for equivalence.
