About this position

EHESP School of Public Health is offering a 24-month post-doctoral researcher position within the DEESSE department and the CITES team at Irset in Rennes, France.

The postdoctoral project, G-REACHE (Greening for Resilient, Equitable, and Adaptable Communities against Heat Exposure), examines how extreme heat affects health across France and how greening interventions may reduce heat-related hospitalizations. The work is positioned at the intersection of environmental science, environmental and climate change epidemiology, spatial analysis, and public health, with a strong environmental justice perspective.

The successful candidate will contribute to three main objectives: analysing associations between extreme heat events and hospitalizations at the commune and IRIS levels from 2010–2023; identifying regionally appropriate greenness indicators reflecting local ecological contexts and policy needs; and simulating the potential impact of selected greening interventions on heat-related hospitalizations.

The research uses a mixed-methods design combining advanced epidemiological methods and causal inference, spatial analysis, remote sensing, and qualitative approaches such as stakeholder interviews and the Delphi method. The postdoc will work closely with academic collaborators and stakeholders in policy and practice to translate findings into locally relevant recommendations and an open-access framework usable across European settings.

This is a full-time temporary academic position based in Rennes, France. The institution is EHESP-School of Public Health, a major French public health institution and component institution of the University of Rennes. The department brings together expertise in toxicology, exposure science, environmental chemistry, environmental epidemiology, public health, geography, urban planning, microbiology, and hydrology.

Eligibility highlights include a PhD in Epidemiology, preferably with environmental epidemiology experience; strong statistical and programming skills, preferably in R; preferred experience with GIS and remote sensing; strong scientific communication skills; and advanced spoken French plus advanced spoken and written English. The role also offers opportunities to lead and co-author publications, present at conferences, and take part in science communication and public engagement activities.

Application is by email with a cover letter and detailed CV. The deadline is 16 November 2026 at 23:59 (Europe/Paris). Contact: [email protected].
