About this position

Fully funded PhD opportunity in AI, Earth Observation, and Environmental Data Science at the HydroTerra Lab, University of Prince Edward Island, Canada. The project is led by Dr. Sara Sadri, Canada Research Chair in Remote Sensing and Water Security, and is supported by NSERC.

The successful student will develop advanced computational methods using large-scale satellite, geospatial, and environmental datasets. Research interests highlighted in the post include machine learning, deep learning, remote sensing, geospatial analysis, statistical modelling, spatial statistics, time-series analysis, data fusion, and environmental forecasting.

Eligibility highlights: an MSc in Computer Science, Civil & Environmental Engineering, or a closely related quantitative field; strong Python and/or R skills; experience with machine learning, geospatial analysis, remote sensing, or environmental data science; strong quantitative reasoning; independent problem-solving; and research/scientific writing experience. Helpful extras include cloud-based geospatial computing, reproducible workflows, publications, a strong MSc thesis, or a research-software portfolio.

What's required

Applicants should have an MSc in Computer Science, Civil & Environmental Engineering, or a closely related quantitative field. Strong programming skills in Python and/or R are required, along with experience in machine learning, statistical modelling, geospatial analysis, remote sensing, or environmental data science. The post also values strong quantitative reasoning, independent problem-solving, research and scientific-writing experience, and the ability to work independently while contributing to collaborative projects. Preferred experience includes cloud-based geospatial computing, large Earth-observation or environmental datasets, deep learning, time-series analysis, spatial statistics, data fusion, environmental forecasting, reproducible workflows, peer-reviewed publications, a strong MSc thesis, or a substantial research-software portfolio. Candidates should also be able to meet Canadian residency/study-permit and relocation requirements in time.
