About this position

Open Universiteit is recruiting a postdoc researcher for the EYE-TEACH project (HORIZON 2020), based at the university’s ECO-Lab in Heerlen, Netherlands. The project sits at the intersection of artificial intelligence, eye tracking, reading comprehension, and education technology, with the goal of transforming teaching practices and supporting European teachers with new pedagogical skills for assessing and supporting students’ reading comprehension.

The postdoc will contribute mainly to work packages 1 and 3. WP1 focuses on how human and artificial intelligence can complement each other, including teacher needs, acceptance of AI tools, readiness to use them, and how teachers interpret AI feedback. WP3 focuses on identifying relevant eye-movement measures and using them in AI algorithms and technical solutions to diagnose learning processes. The role includes user studies, refinement of a teacher dashboard, development of training materials and guidelines, and collaboration with AI developers on collecting and analyzing eye-movement data and integrating AI models into the dashboard.

Required background includes a PhD in Educational Sciences, Pedagogy, Psychology, Computer Science, or a related field; interest in reading processes, eye tracking, AI, feedback, or assessment; experience with user studies, usability testing, and/or co-design; advanced statistical analysis such as mixed effects models, time series analysis, and machine learning; and familiarity with Python or another machine-learning programming language. Applicants should also have peer-reviewed international publications, excellent English, and strong independent and teamwork skills.

The position is a fixed-term appointment from 1 October 2026 or as soon as possible thereafter until 31 December 2027. It is a 28.5-hour-per-week role with flexible working arrangements and hybrid work, though at least two days per week must be spent on campus in Heerlen. Salary is according to Dutch university scale 11, from €4,925 to €6,682 gross per month for full-time employment.
