Postdoc position on Antarctic Mixotrophic Microalgae at the University of Amsterdam (Faculty of Science, Institute for Biodiversity and Ecosystem Dynamics, Department of Freshwater and Marine Ecology).
This postdoctoral opening is part of the NWO-funded project The key role of mixotrophy in Antarctic Carbon and Sulfur Cycles (MACS). The project investigates how Antarctic microalgae respond to multiple environmental stressors, how mixotrophy shapes community composition, physiology, and gene expression, and how these processes influence carbon cycling and dimethylsulfide (DMS) production in a rapidly changing sea-ice environment.
The role combines laboratory experiments, molecular methods, bioinformatic/computational analyses, and fieldwork in polar ecosystems. A major component includes participation in a research expedition to Rothera station on the West Antarctic Peninsula to assess species composition and quantify feeding and photosynthesis rates.
Eligibility highlights: a PhD in phytoplankton ecology, environmental microbiology, biological oceanography, or a related field; experience culturing aquatic microorganisms, performing physiological assays, and doing marine fieldwork; omics and bioinformatics skills are a plus; strong English communication skills; willingness to undertake extended Antarctic fieldwork.

What's required
Applicants must have a PhD degree in phytoplankton ecology, environmental microbiology, biological oceanography, or a related field.
